  4. Introduction
  5. ------------
  6. Birthday allows you to produce an A4 sized poster of the events connected
  7. with someones birthdate. By entering a birthday, data about other people who
  8. share the same birthday, events that took place on that day through history,
  9. popular films & songs of the year & a horoscope will be displayed. Schools
  10. may find this application useful for fund raising events - you can purchase
  11. parchment style paper quite cheaply for printouts to add that 'bit extra'.

  13. Using Birthday
  14. --------------
  15. Load Birthday in the normal way. The main window allows you to enter a
  16. birthday (NOTE only the months Jan, Feb & Mar are supported on this DEMO
  17. disk). Preview your poster by clicking on the Update button at the bottom of
  18. the window. The order that the items are shown (ie famous birthdays, events
  19. etc) can be changed as well as the fonts used (click menu over main window).

  21. Some sample borders are supplied - click on the menu icon near the bottom
  22. right to change them (NOTE borders can only be displayed/printed on machines
  23. with RISC OS 3 or higher).

  25. If you don't like the way the data is arranged by Birthday, then there is
  26. a feature to save the data as text. Drop this saved file into your favourite
  27. DTP package and create your own layout.

  29. Full Version
  30. ------------
  31. If you would like the full version send a cheque (payable to M. Smith) to
  32. the address below for 9.99. You will also receive additional borders, an
  33. editor which will allow you to modify/add to the database, and another
  34. application called Today. This takes the current date and generates a
  35. similar poster, but with slightly different categories. The price may seem
  36. a little high, but it took well over a year to collect all the relevant
  37. data from a variety of sources!

  67. Shown below is a brief description (E & O.E) of applications by the same
  68. author. Virtually all are of an educational nature, running under the WIMP.
  69. Most work on RISC OS 2, all work on RISC OS 3. I have not tried them on a
  70. RISC PC, but they ought to be ok!
  71.  
  72. Geography:
  73. * Where & Grid - Designed for Key Stage 3, Where & Grid are two
  74.   complementary applications. They test locations of countries (Europe &
  75.   Africa), towns, counties (UK only) rivers, montains, bearings, four and
  76.   six figure grid references. Currently the set covers the UK, Europe
  77.   & Africa.
  78. * OS_Symbols - Designed for Key Stage 3, OS_Symbols tests knowledge of a
  79.   range of OS Map symbols. A particular symbol is displayed and the correct
  80.   description must be found - time limits can be set.
  81. * Forecast - Produce your own weather maps just like on TV with symbols and
  82.   isobars. Variety of maps supplied; wind chill can be determined.
  83. * Predict - Predict the weather for the next 24 hours by supplying data
  84.   such are pressure and wind direction.
  85. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game, where all the words are connected
  86.   with Key Satge 3 geography.

  88. Science:
  89. * Circuit symbols - Tests knowledge of circuit and electronic symbols
  90.   against the clock.
  91. * Assist: Science AT4 - Produce a wide range of worksheets for topics on 
  92.   AT4. Each topic has a wide range categories including word searches,
  93.   crosswords, True or False, Anagrams and Missing words. Worksheets are
  94.   created from a databank, so they are different each time they are printed.
  95. * Assist: Equations - Produce four types of worksheets based on chemical
  96.   equations. Categories are Balancing equations, Missing product, Missing
  97.   reactant and Right or Wrong. Because a databank is used, worksheets are
  98.   different each time they are printed.
  99. * Assist: Periodic Table - Print a customised Periodic Table. Displayed data
  100.   can include mass number, density, boiling point, melting point,
  101.   radioactive isotopes, atomic radius, atomic volume, covalent radius,
  102.   ionisation energy, & electronegativity. Graphs and periodic trends can
  103.   also be produced.
  104. * Periodic Table - Click on a particular element to display relevant data. 
  105. * ArcMedia: Space - A simple hypermedia system on the Solar System. Designed
  106.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. Variety of NASA images.
  107. * Multiple Choice Chemistry - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  108.   pictures) covering GCSE Chemistry. Time limits can be set.
  109. * Multiple Choice Physics - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  110.   pictures) covering GCSE Physics. Time limits can be set.

  112. Word Puzzles:
  113. * Word Search - Application for creating word searches. Control over grid
  114.   size, displayed fonts, grid shape & borders is provided.
  115. * Do Search - Compliments the Word Search application. Data files from Word
  116.   Search can be dragged into Do Search, allowing the word search to be done
  117.   on screen
  118. * X-Word - Creates and prints crosswords from words and clues provided by
  119.   the user. Control over grid size, displayed fonts & borders is provided.
  120. * Do-Word - Compliments the X-Word application. Data files from X-Word can
  121.   be dragged into Do Word, allowing the crossword to be done on screen.
  122. * Anagram - Reconstruct the jumbled up word by solid dragging of the
  123.   letters. Hint feature is also provided.
  124. * Guess - Guess the word chosen by the computer. Hint feature provided.
  125. * Bottle - Hangman type game, but with bottles. Hints also provided.
  126. * Cloze - Removes words (user can determine how many) from a passage of
  127.   text. User must then reconstruct the entire text by entering words into
  128.   gaps in the text. Add your own passages of text easily. Summary can be
  129.   printed.

  131. Picture Puzzles:
  132. * Blocksaw - Jigsaw type application, using blocks for the pieces. Accepts
  133.   sprite and draw files. Size of the grid can be varied to cover a wide
  134.   range of abilities.
  135. * Tile - Picture is broken into a series of tiles, and then the tiles mixed
  136.   up. The picture must be recreated by swapping tiles. Uses sprite or draw
  137.   files; allows the number of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty
  138.   levels.
  139. * Slide - Sliding block puzzle. Uses sprite or draw files; allows the number
  140.   of tiles to be varied and has three difficulty levels.
  141. * Rows n Cols - Recreate a picture (either sprite or draw) by sliding rows
  142.   or columns into their correct positions.

  144. Miscellaneous:
  145. * Link - A 'blockbuster' type quiz game for up to three players. Database
  146.   can be easily modified to include your own words.
  147. * Multiple Choice (General) - Multiple choice quiz, some with pictures. Many
  148.   general knowledge topics covered. Editor also available so you can create
  149.   your own tests.
  150. * Multiple Choice Maths - Several hundred multiple questions (some with
  151.   pictures) covering GCSE Maths. Time limits can be set.
  152. * ArcMedia (Cats) - A simple hypermedia system on the Cat Family. Designed
  153.   to be 1Meg RISC OS 2 friendly. 
  154. * Word Tester - Tests knowledge of the correct word for numbers from one to
  155.   one hundred in various languages. Played against the clock.
  156. * Facemaker - Use your computer to design a face, then either print or
  157.   export as a sprite file.
  158. * Desktop Turtle - Create on screen graphics with a 'Turtle' within a
  159.   desktop window. Wide range of commands supported including numeric
  160.   variables as well as sprites and sounds. Other features include variable
  161.   line thickness, auto symmetry and backdrops.
  162. * Birthday & Today. Produce an A4 sized poster on events taking place in
  163.   history either on your Birthday or any particular day. Information
  164.   displayed includes Famous Birthdays on the same day, events, films, songs
  165.   and sporting events. Variety of borders/watermarks provided.
  166. * School CV & CV+. School leavers (CV) or sixth form students (CV+) can
  167.   quickly create a CV by entering data. Layouts can be chosen from a
  168.   predefined set, and fonts changed. DTP style output without having to use
  169.   a DTP application.
